Questions to ask before an EV charger installation
A scope checklist for panel capacity, routing, permits, commissioning and future needs.
Establish available capacity
An electrician should review service size, existing loads and local code requirements before recommending a circuit. A panel that appears full is not automatically overloaded, and an open space is not proof of capacity.
Where capacity is constrained, discuss lower charging power, managed load devices or service upgrades. The right answer depends on the household load profile and local rules.
Make hidden work visible in the quote
Confirm the circuit length, wiring method, wall penetrations, trenching, weather protection, disconnects, permit fees and repair of finished surfaces. A short equipment list is not a complete installation scope.
If the charger will be outdoors or shared, include mounting height, impact protection, cable storage and access control. Plan connector reach without creating a trip path.
Commission the complete system
After installation, verify that the vehicle begins charging, the expected power appears, scheduling works and the circuit remains stable under load. Save equipment serial numbers and permit records.
Ask who handles warranty service and whether network features require a subscription. The basic ability to charge should not depend on optional cloud features unless that tradeoff is intentional.
